The key for achieving a photo-realistic look in the final images for this headset required large-scale, custom painted textures (16, 4K-8K Textures). In order to have the most control over the textures there was quite a bit of retopo work that needed to be done and careful attention to the details of the physical device. Almost every element was rebuilt from the original CAD files. The remote was completely rebuilt and used a combination of UDIMs and color IDs for the texture sets. The front mesh of the visor was made in Substance designer from a custom shape built to reflect the original device. Then Substance Painter was used to add a bit of variation and color. Stitching was added to the straps simply through painted on textures instead of using curves and the velcro patch, which didn't exist in the CAD files, was built from scratch, painted in substance and a particle system was used to generate the hair detail.
