This bumper was unlike most that I have ever done. I worked with one of newhopes teaching pastors to develop a theme for the series which was centered around helping people navigate healthy relationships. We eventually decided on a sleezy nightclub feel with neon signs on a grungy wall. I developed the sign and logo in illustrator and used it as a foundation to build out the signs in 3D. Developing the neon sign material was a unique challenge as I had to make an emissive material (the lights) work together with a black paint material that colored the tubes black, like in real life, to hide the lights and break up the signs dynamics. I worked early on with finding the right music track that would capture the essence of the visual style and synced the animation by using some visual cues. Camera moves and focal shifting were crucial to keeping this animation feel kinetic since the pieces are all static. I rendered out 2 different animations for every scene, one with the lights off and one with them on, so that I could also turn lights on or have the light move through the tubes in compositing.
